Now entering its 11th year, the Goldman “Goldie” Barefield Scholarship recipients were recently announced, with Sweetwater High School seniors Allie Jo Howard, Ava Fitch, and Randy Barnes receiving the honor. These recipients have chosen to attend Tennessee Wesleyan University, with scholarships totaling $6,000.

Pamela Clark of State Farm Insurance in Sweetwater established the Goldman “Goldie” Barefield Annual Scholarship fund in 2012 to carry on her father’s legacy. “Goldie” Barefield was a lifelong resident of Etowah and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Although Mr. Barefield did not have the opportunity to pursue an education, he made it a priority for Clark and her sister to complete their college degrees. Ms. Clark graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan in 1988.

This year, the scholarship committee chose three deserving students from Sweetwater High School based on their application submission. In 11 years, the fund has raised more than $112,000, benefiting 46 recipients. The award was presented by TWU Admissions Counselor Ariana Conwell at Sweetwater High School’s awards night.

ALLIE JO HOWARD – Allie is an exemplary student who often goes above and beyond what is asked of her in the classroom. She prides herself on being a good example to others. When Allie is not excelling the classroom for herself she volunteers her time to help to help in other schools in her community. In addition, Allie volunteers with her church and is a frequent volunteer and participant in numerous parades and festivals.

AVA FITCH – Ava is currently serving as the Junior Main Street President. In this role she serves her community and helps local businesses to become more successful. She is also a member of the SHS Student Council, Beta Club, FCA, and S Club. Each year she volunteers to help with the Bloom, Bluegrass and Barbecue event as well as volunteering at her local high school. “My heart is with the children in our community.”

RANDY  BARNES – Randy is a proven leader and high academic achiever. In his work as a shift lead, he provides guidance and direction to achieved the desired objectives if his employer. He maintains a 3.9 GPA and is the captain of the cross country team. Additionally, Randy is an accomplished guitarist and bassist and lends his gifts and talents to many churches in the Sweetwater area.

“I am so appreciative to Pamela for her commitment to fund these scholarships at Tennessee Wesleyan,” said Blake McCaslin, Vice President for Advancement. “I have been touched by Pamela’s deep love for her father and her desire to keep his legacy alive. I am honored to work with her and the committee each year as they select the student recipients.”

Scholarships are such a worthy investment. The University hopes Pamela’s generosity inspires others to consider creating a legacy of support through named scholarship gifts.
